Haringey’s Racing Scene: Local Lad Ready for Rebound After Irish St Leger Disappointment

Racing may seem like a distant world for some Haringey residents, but it has a strong connection to our local community. Recently, a young horse from the area placed fifth in the prestigious Irish St Leger, and trainer Willie Mullins is optimistic about his comeback.

The talented horse, son of Teofilo, had previously impressed at Group Three level with wins at Leopardstown and Ascot. Despite a disappointing finish in the St Leger, Mullins believes it was just a temporary setback.

“We’ve entered him in the Cumberland Lodge,” Mullins shared. “He didn’t perform as expected in the race, and we’re working to understand why he didn’t finish stronger.”

Mullins noted that the horse needed the race and is now back to a mile and a half – a distance where he has succeeded before with wins at Group Three level.

“Last year, he excelled at Leopardstown on good ground,” Mullins recalled. “He has shown his talent at Group Three level and should be competitive in this upcoming race.”

The Cumberland Lodge is one of the options for the promising horse, who may also compete in Ireland or Newbury in the future.

Local trainers Karl Burke and William Haggas are also making waves with their horses. Burke’s Silver Cup winner Al Qareem is aiming for a third consecutive victory in the race.

Although Haringey doesn’t have its own racing track (yet, who knows what the future holds with the Olympic Stadium nearby!), our community has a deep-rooted history in the sport. We’ll be rooting for our local lad as he looks to bounce back from his recent setback and showcase his talent once again.
